If anybody has any knowledge of Hawse brand equipment I would appreciate your comments. I have found a local dealer who seems to sell the stuff right and was wondering how good it is. example: 5'6' box blade - $315, 5' brush hog - $590, 6' finish mower - $1095. The equipment looks pretty good.

Eddie, I have a 5' Howse box blade and a 5' Howse rotary cutter (I'm guessing that we're talking about the same brand and that you used an "a" instead of "o" in their name). I've only had mine for about 6 months, but I have a neighbor who has a 7' Howse rotary cutter that he's had many years. As with most brands, they make several different models and I have the cheap one ($495 for the rotary cutter). I had a Bush Hog rotary cutter and a Monroe Tufline box blade (both 4' sizes) before, and there's no doubt that they were better and heavier duty quality than the Howse, but I also think the Howse is a better buy for the money for my use. I don't intend to mow brush over about 1" diameter, and I don't think my 27hp tractor can break the box blade. So far the box blade has seen a lot of heavy duty use, but the rotary cutter has only mowed 30-35 acres of pasture. ....

Bird, you are right, it is Howse. I have about 8 acres of pasture with virtually nothing but bermuda and fescue and the tractors I am looking at are in the 27-30 hp range. It sounds like these would work for me as well. They did have a rotary cutter for $495 so I may go with the lighter rotary cutter as well. The more expensive one was little tougher looking, I thought and had a slip clutch rather than a shear pin, but I am not sure that is that important considering my pasture. Thanks. I am new at this tractor and implement thing so I appreciate the help. So far it has sure been fun just shopping and driving the stuff, though. This bulletin board is great. I enjoy reading all the comments. ....

Howse = Cheap Now - Expensive parts later. Howse is an ok cheap cutter, but be aware of several things about their rotary cutters. Their cutter uses a very unusual U-joint in the driveline that is unavailable anywhere except a Howse dealer and costs about 2-3 times as much as one in a standard driveline. Parts are usually a little more difficult to find then say for Bush Hog brand equipment. We used to sell their (Howse) stuff, but have found when you explain it properly most folks will pay a little bit more to get the better quality in Genuine Bush Hog. If you want a quote on a Bush Hog cutter let us know. ....

We have never handled Howse, but did have King Kutter. The latter doesn't stand up well, in my opinion, to our current low-price line...made by WAC(International Machinery). 4' rotary cutter-$489, as heavy a 4' as you'll find, 5'-$499, 5'grader blade w/replaceable edge-$159, 4' box blade-$249, 5'-$259. We had lots of problems with the wheels on the KK finish mowers, currently have Caroni, $995 for 5' or 6' finish mower. ....

Howse...not good at all. If your use will be very infrequent, like once per season, then maybe the Howse brand will suffice otherwise it is like buying the Tiawan or China brand of tools...gauranteed to break. The welds are poorly made and skimping is the rule not the exception. I have a 4ft rotary deck and used it 2 or 3 times. Threw a U joint out the very first time and tore off a skid plate on the front corner the second time. I suspect the steel quality is also very low compared to JDeere or Tuffline brands. I will not buy again. ....
